The Problem of Plenty
UPSC Preparation market these days is flooded with materials. While some say that this has made Preparation easier, my take is that this has made life trickier for most aspirants , especially those who have just started! In this blog , I will try to help you in making a correct choice about the materials to refer , how to ensure that you don't deviate from your goal and the Preparation track becomes easier for you.
Rule1:Stick to basics
Always go by traditional wisdom. Read the NCERT's first and then go for the subject specific book like Lakshmikant for polity, Spectrum for modern history , shankar for environment , mrunal sir's notes for economy and pmf for geography.
Rule2:Have your own notes
Writing down content makes it easier for you to comprehend it and also gives you deeper understanding of the same. But , please don't directly jump to note making . Pursuing note making in a scientific way will help you in revising it faster later and also help you in keeping stock of your knowledge . The nitty gritty of answer writing we will discuss in another blog . But , coming back to the point , have your own notes and stick to them. Have faith on your own notes and always prefer them over any other coaching material.
Rule3:Don't get enticed by every new material in the market
It is but human that we tend to reach out for each and every new material that gets released in the market. You see a new book on maps in the market and you jump off to purchase it intuitively. I suggest that you refrain from doing this. Stick to the basics. Not everything that is sold in the market is relevant for you.
Rule4:Daily newspaper reading
Often students miss out this and then try to read each and every new material that comes their way. This leads to them reading absolutely non relevant materials. There are coaching institutes who in a desperate bid to establish themselves are relaesing "Information booklets" which are totally irrelevant! Try to not get into their traps.
Conclusively, trust your instincts. If you think a particular material is relevant, only then you should read it, else you should totally save yourself from wasting those few precious hours of yours. This Preparation is a long journey and you have to choose your battles wisely , else you will deviate from the goal for which you started.
Good luck 😁
